A particularly memorable mission under the dancing lights of Coney Island’s amusement rides is a highlight that manages to impressively capture the story’s essence and bottle up its emotional tension before emphatically smashing it. There are a few cool explorable locations like the Emily-May Foundation and Coney Island, but the rest is just a blob of boring buildings. Venom isn’t around long enough either, especially for the impact they act like he had on the city, but it just about made all the waiting worth it. Especially with the added personal connection between Spider-Man and Venom, really highlighting Venom as the dark mirror of Peter. It takes a very long time for Venom to show up, some would say too long, but he steals the show the second he does.
To cater to this, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC offers a wide range of graphics settings and presets, including options without ray-tracing, like dynamic resolution scaling. Though not wildly different mechanically (they’re separated mostly by a different set of combat powers), the two do feel impressively different, largely thanks to top notch animation work and a commendable attention to detail. How much this dual protagonist feature actually adds to the game is a little questionable I think, but the execution is undeniably slick. Since Spider-Man 2 came out in September 2023, Insomniac has released a number of updates for the game, adding New Game+, mission replay, new suits, and more. But fans had hoped that story DLC would give them more of a reason to return to Insomniac’s wonderful recreation of New York that the addition of new features. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s gameplay and its previous iterations, similarly plays like the Arkham series, Assassin’s Creed series, and even Ghost of Tsushima.

The majority of the side activities wind up feeling both mechanically and narratively pointless. An electric bike race feels silly enough in a Spider-Man game, but when the stakes are just “I need someone to try out my electric bike”, it’s hard not to think Miles and Peter have more pressing stuff to be getting on with. Far too much of what you’re doing feels like padding from the early days of open world games—there’s more inspiration here from Crackdown than there is from GTA V.
I also don’t think any of the suits look better than the base ones. Spider-Man is one of Sony’s preeminent exclusive titles, so it gets the extra special optimization treatment. The game has a graphics-oriented Fidelity mode and a 60 frames-per-second Performance mode.
